Alcyone + Ceyx

Alcyone + Ceyx

Ceyx and Alcyone had between them a love so profound that it dared to echo the gods. The two were the perfect pair – a match that could only have been made by the fates themselves. A sea-faring merchant and his faithful wife. Though they argued, and drifted, just as any pair might, they always returned to each other.

In their home, the two would often refer to each other as “Zeus” and “Hera.” Though they would never dare to so boldly and abashedly mimic the gods in public, within the four walls of their private sanctuary, it felt as though they ruled the world.

The Queen of the Gods, however, never could ignore a transgression, no matter how small. Hera’s ears began to burn, as if there was a low hum of someone calling her name from the other room. She followed the sound to the doorstep of Ceyx and Alcyone, where she simply stood and listened. The more she overheard, the angrier she got. A hot rage boiled within her as she felt more and more offended, thinking Alcyone and Ceyx were mocking her. Their love felt like a slap in the face to a woman who spent her life chasing her husband, a man whose indiscretions were too many to count.

Hera was jolted from her own mind by the sound of the door clicking open. Quickly, she darted away towards the forest, her cheeks still flush with anger.

Hera watched as Ceyx stepped out, his bag gripped tightly in his fist. Alcyone followed. Hera felt nauseated as she saw the  two embrace, and then separate. Alcyone bid him farewell, her voice barely a whisper over the whipping wind that began just then, almost from nowhere.

Ceyx set sail. As he pulled away from port, a storm began to brew just on the edge of the horizon. At first, it seemed like a minor squall, a patch of wind to be easily dealt with. As the ship neared, though, it became clear that this was no small patch of weather. This was the rage of the immortal, the punishment of the divine

As the relentless fury of the sea battered the hull of Ceyx’s ship, he thought of his wife Alcyone. He cried out for her, his beautiful wife, his queen, the final breath of a man who loved nothing more. His wails were drowned by the powerful crack of thunder, and his body and vessel were swallowed by the merciless waves of the sea. Hera’s work was complete, and her jealousy was satiated.

In their home, Alcyone awaited her beloved’s return. Her heart grew heavier with each passing day, an overwhelming sense of unfounded dread haunting her every move. Not all gods are without mercy, though. On the once-sunny day where Hera exacted her plan, Iris, goddess of rainbows, bore witness. Her pity overtook her as she watched Alcyone pace restlessly, not knowing what fate befell her husband. Iris gathered her robes and began her descent to the underworld, searching desperately for Hypnos, god of dreams.

Iris begged Hypnos to appear to Alcyone in her dreams that night. She pleaded with him to show Alcyone the fate of her husband. To reveal the truth, however devastating, was in itself a kindness.

That night, like every night since Ceyx had departed, Alcyone lay restless. Her worry gnawed at her, the dark circles under her eyes only growing blacker. Whatever reservations Hypnos had were swept away as he watched this woman suffer. He placed Alcyone into a deep, restful sleep, and entered her dream.

Alcyone found herself on the cliffs of the shoreline, where she stood to wave Ceyx off on his journeys. The weather was perfect, the sun shining on her face, but Alcyone could not relax no matter how serene the scene. There, Hypnos appeared as himself, simply a messenger. With a gentleness that belied the grim news he bore, he revealed to Alcyone the tragic demise of her beloved Ceyx. Though he was as kind as he could be, the news devastated Alcyone. She fell to her knees, sobs wracking her body, her world shattered. No, not shattered – drowned. The light of the setting sun reflected in her eyes an endless abyss of sorrow.

Alcyone awoke in her own bed, now wanting nothing more than to join her husband. Inconsolable and filled with a grief that knew no bounds, Alcyone walked to the cliffs. With a deep breath, she threw herself into the sea, a surrender to the depths. A final act of love that transcended the mortal coil, a dive into the unknown to be with the one who cried for her with his final breath.

Hypnos was moved by the depths of Alcyone’s love, and her ultimate sacrifice. He found himself compelled to intervene, knowing a love so strong did not deserve to be punished like this. Hypnos pulled the souls of the pair from the banks of the Lethe, transforming them both into majestic Halcyon Kingfisher birds. Together, they rose from the waters, their feathers glinting in the rising sun. They soared together through the air, a vibrant image of two souls who could not be kept apart.

Each year, during the Halcyon days, when the sea turns calm and gentle, it is said that it is Alcyone and Ceyx who still the waters. The birds nest beside the tranquil sea, a reminder of the love that carried two people from mortal passion to divine legend. Together.
