One thing does set her story apart, though – She knew how it would end before it began.

The daughter of Priam and Hecuba, sister to Hector, Cassandra was destined to be exceptional. Cassandra was stunningly gorgeous, brilliant, and kind. Her demeanor impressed all who met her, without exception. Not even the gods were immune to her charms.

It was this glow that drew Apollo to her. He fell madly in love, but Cassandra was not easily swayed by suitors, no matter their charms. Apollo was not used to being denied the love of a mortal, but Cassandra was steadfast in her refusals of his advances. Apollo would not give up, though. He showered her with gifts, and the most brilliant of all was the gift of prophecy.

Despite his many efforts, Cassandra remained uninterested in Apollo’s romantic pursuits. Angered by this rejection, Apollo twisted his gift into a cruel curse – Cassandra would live out her days without belief. Though her prophecies would always ring true, her words would be ignored.

Thus, Cassandra lived, ensnared between the divine and the mortal, her voice echoing truths that fell on deaf ears. She foresaw the cataclysm that would engulf her city, first in the birth of her brother Paris. With sorrow-laden eyes, she proclaimed that his actions would usher in the ruin of Troy, yet her warnings were dismissed as the ravings of a mad woman.

Years later, Paris returned home with Helen, the face to launch a thousand ships. Cassandra wept, begging for the dismissal of the girl, pleading that her beauty would bring nothing but pain to the city. Her words, as always, were lost in the wind.

As Cassandra predicted, the Trojan war left the city in ashes. She watched helplessly as her brother’s body was paraded through the streets, a vision she was forced to see twice. That was the curse of Cassandra. As tragedy after tragedy befell the members of the royal family of Troy, Cassandra knew she would be next.

Cassandra sought refuge in the temple of Athena, but even divine sanctuary could not protect her from the horrors of war. Greek soldiers sacked the town, and not a building was left untouched. Eventually, they made it to the temple, tearing the doors clean off their hinges in search of Cassandra, princess of Troy.

Though she struggled to break free, Cassandra was captured and taken to Mycenae. There, she would become the concubine to King Agamemnon, her beautiful face still an asset despite its now-battered appearance.

There, she met Clytemnestra, a woman who at one time might have shown the girl kindness, but who had become hardened from decades of betrayal. Of course, Cassandra knew what her future held. The hands of Clytemnestra would not hold Cassandra sweetly, as she so hoped, but would take her life. In the end, though, the poisoned tea seemed less bitter than the profound loneliness of bearing an unheeded truth.

And so she raised the cup to her lips, for the first time seeing in front of her only darkness.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0675/5781/8687/files/5032156A-0F97-463E-A0E8-E7DA71F7BC2D_4_5005_c.jpg?v=1753592091
