Rarely would they venture out alone, and never did they fail to return. The women swore their lives to Artemis and Artemis alone, committed to a life of running together tighter than a pack of wolves. By night, they raced through the woods taking down game ten times their size, some of the most skilled hunters in the world. By day, they lounged at campsites, cooked and ate the spoils from the last night’s hunt, and prepared for the night to come.

The women functioned as a perfect team, with Artemis at the helm, the alpha of the pack. Always by her side was her second in command, Callisto. Artemis and Callisto moved in perfect unison, rarely even needing to speak. Their bond was deep, their love passionate.

Many mornings, Callisto broke away from the group to bathe in a nearby stream. She took advantage of the warm morning sun, soaking her sore muscles in the cold water. Zeus often watched these baths from afar, without the knowledge of Callisto. He became infatuated with her glistening skin and toned muscles gleaming in the sunlight, and eventually, he decided he must have her for himself. But how? Callisto would never break her solemn oath to Artemis, her commander, her friend, her lover. And so, Zeus began to scheme.

Finally, after days of watching, Zeus made his move. He disguised himself as Artemis and approached Callisto in her bath. Callisto, none the wiser, welcomed the imposter, and the two made love.

As she returned to camp, she found the true Artemis among the other women. Knowing it was impossible for her to have returned so quickly, Callisto began to wonder what trick may have been played on her. For weeks she considered what could have happened, until finally, she began to feel movement in her body. Callisto was pregnant, something that could only have happened by a broken vow. Artemis, crushed that the woman she trusted with her life would betray her, banished her from the group.

Callisto begged for forgiveness and understanding, but Artemis could not be convinced. Finally, Callisto relented, packing her things and wandering forlorn into the wilderness. As she walked, she prayed to the gods, begging for help. Hera heard her words, patron goddess of motherhood as she was. Taking pity on the girl, Hera set out to discover the truth.

What happened next was not unfamiliar – Hera discovered her husband’s infidelity, and punished his consort for his crimes. Callisto was no different. Hera’s wrath crashed down upon Callisto and her new son, Arcas. The pair were turned into bears, sentenced to lumber through the woods without a pack for the remainder of their days.

Though this curse may have seemed harsh, Callisto and Arcas made the best of their new lives. Callisto had spent much of her life as a human in the wilderness, and this was no different. She continued to spend her days lounging, bathing, and enjoying the sun, and her nights scouring the forests for prey.

It was one of these evenings when Callisto found herself surrounded. She was always on high alert during these nights, but she had grown complacent as an apex predator. Her hubris became her downfall as she passed between the trees, a silver arrow hitting her squarely in the chest. She had not even seen the huntress who drew the bow.

Artemis appeared by her side, kneeling down to finish what the archer had started. Just as she drew her blade across the neck of the bear, though, she saw a glint of recognition in Callisto’s eye. The pieces of the story fell into place in Artemis’ mind, and suddenly, she knew what she had done. Callisto had not lied that day in the forest, nor would she ever have betrayed Artemis that way. Artemis leaned down and wrapped her fingers in the bear’s thick fur, and wept.

Finally, as Callisto drew her final breath, Artemis decided to immortalize her friend. The two bears live side by side to this day, Ursa major and Ursa minor, guiding the hunters by night as Callisto always had.
